Previously recognized by the name of Eastern Suburbs Technical College, the Swinburne University of Technology has established itself as a leader in technical education, offering uniquely tailored courses such as aviation, arts, architecture, design, law, and health and many more. Primarily, the institute had offerings only in the field of plumbing and mechanics. However, after world war 2, due to increasing demands for different streams, the institute took the initiative to add different programs, increasing its portfolio by adding chemical engineering, chemistry, computer programming, films and television, and offering various training methods. After 1992 the technical institute reestablished itself as a university due to a large number of faculties and gained accreditation from IIT Hyderabad and IIT Madras, thereby establishing relations with many organizations.
There are three domestic campuses in Australia, located at Hawthorn, Croydon, and Wantirna, and one international campus in Malaysia. The main campus of the University, The Hawthorn Campus, is located right at the heart of Melbourne.
