The University of New South Wales is an open public research university that was established back in 1946. Its development was aimed at meeting the new demands of the advancing technologies. It started with the name of the New South Wales University of Technology, but it later gained university status in 1949. The university was then allotted funds to expand its campus and build new buildings to accommodate different faculties. The following year, the university opened its gates for the students, and the first academic session saw the enrolment of 46 students. The University of New South Wales went on to establish two new colleges in Newcastle and Wollongong.
The main campus of the University of New South Wales is located in Kensington, Sydney, which house two centres for research. The university also funded the Lowy Cancer Research Centre to study cancer and related problems in adults and children. Wainwright Analytical Centre is another university research centre that studies physical, biological, and chemical materials. The main campus houses the faculties of science, medicine and engineering, and it also features several music rooms, fitness centres and theatre halls. Both the students and the general public can access these facilities on the campus.
