Create a proposal consisting of two strategies that Birmingham Airport can implement in order to be considered for the ACI Best Airport Award, focussing on Community Relations and Environmental Awareness.

Task Guidance

“The Airports Council International “Best Airport Awards” are presented to airports for excellence and achievement across a whole range of disciplines including retail, security, operations, facilities, community relations, environmental awareness and customer service”. (Airports Council International, 2019)

As you are aware, community relations and environmental awareness are two vital facets of sustainability, and, as such, provide the theme to your assignment.

The plan itself can focus on any of the sustainable aviation themes analysed in the module; be it one specific theme or a more holistic approach of various themes.

Answer

Proposal
This proposal prepared in the aviation management assignment will primarily focus on two of the most fundamental aspects of sustainability in aviation, viz. community relations and environmental awareness. Birmingham Airport can enhance its performance and increase its chances of being considered for the ACI Best Airport Award.

1. Community Relations
Strategies can vary from time to time, but the fundamentals of effective communication, confidence, establishing long term relationships will continue. The aim is to raise confidence and appreciation. There will be a few that will argue, but the gains for all greatly outweigh the expenses. For achieving this goal, airports must increase their image and become active people in their local communities (Wang, et al. 252). Improving the reputation of the aviation sector helps the airport to become more welcomed by its neighbours. Usually, airports draw controversy because of traffic, air quality and other issues that affect local citizens. Via acts and the good efforts made by airport officials, affect public sentiment and establish relationships with local colleges, companies and community stakeholders to support both parties. To improve air traffic at the airport, the airport wants to partner with local businessmen and the government. An airport becomes an important part of the city as it identifies itself as a trusted and trusted entity.

Public understanding of an airport is of interest to its long-term viability (K?lk?? 105) Many citizens still do not realize that the airport is a vital, beneficial and significant presence in the city. Almost all airport concerns are linked to this confusion of the group and officials. Opponents to build an airport also contend that it would add pollution, environmental problems, and place pressure on taxpayers. However, the airport should directly inform the public about the importance of the airport as well as general aviation.

Strategy to Improve Community Relations

1) Community Interaction
Birmingham Airport should start with public awareness-raising activities with corporate and non-profit agencies. These are the individuals who control policies and make policy choices dependent on needs. To strengthen the relationship between the airport and the local population, Birmingham Airport must be accountable and investigate and show all the good stuff about the airport. Facts regarding the airport's importance to disaster relief, law enforcement, company recruiting, or agricultural activities may be given. Many of these considerations should be clearly presented with the economic impact knowledge collected. There are ways in which a bad picture of the airport can be changed.

1. Cleaning up the Airport. Looking from the perspective of the neighbours, if the airport operators do not comply adequately with the area, neighbouring residents may find it unsuitable.

2. Changing certain things. If noise issues exist at an airport, minor improvements to operating practices may have a substantial effect on overall passenger perception.

3. Inviting the local people. Airports may be useful for encouraging aviation in the communities. Events such as airport anniversary parties, an open house, aircraft exhibits, fly-ins, or antique exhibitions, all can pull in additional revenue at the airport. Often, most types of volunteer events involve limited budgetary contributions (Guimarans, et al. 112).

2) Actions in the Political Arena
Airports are nearly often managed and controlled by a municipal governing body. Local authorities like mayors, city councils presidents and county commissioners play an important part in every regional airport. Some people would have a strong influence on the future of the airport. Political action initiative needs commitment and clear political backing. The group should help enter roles on airport boards and advisory councils to assist their airport and protect it from potential incidents. Birmingham's progress in winning these roles would allow it to reach out to the decision-makers. The airport has to build strong relationships, inform policymakers, and engage in meetings in local politics, and help pro-airport politicians and even run for office by itself (Payán?Sánchez, et al. 551) There are some aspects to keep in mind when encouraging airports to have a major difference; these will be discussed below-

  • Being courteous. Officials of the Birmingham Airport can still be kind with the crowd.
  • Follow instructions. They ought to publish their stance so that interested people can study it.
  • It must be sufficiently informed of the opposition's point of view, and be prepared to respond.
  • Before speaking, one must address the crowd with his/her name, the party that s/he supports, and will be voting (if the person lives in the jurisdiction). Then they need to justify whether s/he is pro or against these measures (Guimarans, et al. 120).

3) Relation with Media
Although many aircrews have no experience communicating with the media, a sound partnership between the fleet and the local news outlet would be a major advantage when increased fleet coverage is expected. The key points of Birmingham Airport’s public relations strategy are to establish a partnership with local media sources, send news releases, write letters to the editor, and provide press advisories. It is easier to contact news reporters via local media sources. By forming this link, it serves as a source of information about aviation matters. It is also important to note that your success depends mostly on how successful you are when supporting the news reporters. It is necessary to know the truth, resist conjecture, and be impartial in political discourse. Having other various papers including press releases, letters to the publisher, and announcements will also assist the situation. When writing press releases, it should be borne in mind that each must contain contact details for the group, be succinct, to the point, and above all, contain true news. When writing for a newspaper, it is necessary to always have the “Five W's”. By supplying the “who, what, when, where, and why” information about the subject, the press release should be of interest to the local media source (Payán?Sánchez, et al. 550). Press releases will rarely address any of the readers' questions. The name mentioned on the letterhead line must be able to be called instantly and ready to talk on the topic.

Environmental Awareness
Airports, with the amenities and resources they offer, are regarded as one of the most essential aspects of the necessary infrastructure for routine operations of airplanes. The environmental effects are also undeniable because of the operation of airports. The aviation industry will witness a robust increase in demand for air transport and this will generate more problems for environmental, economic and growth issues. Any of the key issues about the airport include electricity consumption, pollution, noise and land usage (Zhang, Butler, and Yang 109). Today, the challenge for airport authorities is to sustain economic development in combination with environmental issues.

Strategy to be Implemented in the Context of Environmental Awareness
Birmingham Airport should seek to design a workable strategy to reduce their negative impact on the environment. Through designing and adopting acceptable and efficient environmental protection methods, airport authorities will strike the balance between airport growth and citizens' and regulators' satisfaction. Local communities have always shown strong opposition to airports expansion. Without the adequate capacity to build and implement (e.g. airport environmental management) environmental obligations, airports' potentials and infrastructural facilities cannot be completely put into use. Birmingham Airports may have a major impact on economic and social development by addressing local neighborhood questions regarding the climate (Uysal and Sogut 1393). Good interpersonal interaction with communities will guarantee that the airport expansion proposals can be approved quickly.

1) Addressing Issues Related to Pollution
The aviation industry faces one of the significant environmental threats that air pollution, climate change and ozone layer depletion. Aircraft engines can produce dangerous gasses and particles which can impact human members from the ground level to higher altitudes. At the basic level where airports are concerned, one of the detrimental effects of aircraft pollution is the contamination of air quality, which can directly affect human health. Carbon emission from the airport is regarded as a major component of the environmental hazard of the airport.

Noise can be described as an unwelcome sound that can have adverse effects on peoples' quality of life. With the introduction of the aviation industry, aircraft noise is one of the most significant forms of noise emissions (Sharma and Singh 152). The biggest sources of noise are the jet engine and aircraft frame. From an environmental perspective, an airport's most obvious impacts are noise pollution. It further contributes to the already current issue with aircraft noise in airports. Airports need to take care of the people living in their immediate proximity and help them profit from the airport's operations. Any recommended remedies were spatial planning, implementing new technology and designs, and limiting the operation of certain aircraft types, duration of flights and night flights, land use, and redistributing the noise by controlling runways and routing of aircraft. By imposing curfews and noise curfews at airports, noise emissions may be minimized.

2) Managing Impact on Land and Production of Waste
The impacts of airports do not only affect aircraft growth. Whilst the airport is a remarkable achievement, it needs to keep an eye on flight routes and noise pollution. Land take refers to the use of land by airports for the purpose of building and running the activities related to airports. Through operating procedures and improving capacity gains, additional runway and facilities needed can be prevented. Airport waste applies to the garbage the airport is responsible for the rubbish caused by tourists, airfield facilities, and airport operations and maintenance practices. As a result of construction and demolition, the volume of airport waste is limited. Moreover, practices such as airplanes de-icing and anti-icing, refueling, and repair of aircraft and vehicle will result in the leakage of toxins to water bodies and may contribute to harmful impacts on human health (Wang, et al. 252). Airline and air travel management is another concern associated with airport authorities. Airports should optimize their ability to reduce airline fuel consumption.

3) Taking Steps to Ensure Financial, Social and Environmental Sustainability
While considering the broad category of sustainability, the three aspects of financial sustainability, social sustainability and environmental sustainability should be considered. These influences several types of industries related to aviation. The vital importance of a particular airport to a country's economy should be considered by policymakers when preparing for the airport's operations and extension. Care should be taken during airport improvements to reduce the risks and losses that can come from it. Strategies that maximise the social and economic gains are favoured by analysts. Sustainable airport strategy implies taking into consideration all the socio-economic and environmental considerations. Policymakers must weigh various aspects, and then establish an appropriate sustainability solution. In this way, environmental and economic issues are taken into account. Involvement of local people in setting and sustaining sustainable air transport infrastructure is the key step to improve the aviation system. Making environmental management effective can be accomplished by engaging various groups from the local community (Yilmaz and Atmanli 1381).

To research the environmental impacts of airports closely is the first step in airport management means first define the environmental issues at the given airport and then measure and quantify its effect in various areas such as air pollution, noise disruption, waste and water contamination. To make better assumptions about emissions impacts, Birmingham Airport can use simulations and robust statistical approaches (Sharma and Singh 149). Evaluation processes and approaches continue to be modified as time passes on so they can be more reliable.

Birmingham Airport should prepare and design plans to control emissions and mitigate the pressure of population because of the findings from phase one. This stage involves planning both preventative and remedial steps to achieve agreed priorities and objectives. Involvement in stakeholders is a vitally essential part of the achievement of sustainability plans and goals.

In addition to these mentioned points, a constant flow of oversight and investigation work on the environmental effects of airports should be continuously pursued (Uysal and Sogut 1396). Daily monitoring and evaluations on the airport results concerning environmental conditions are part of the processes. This means checking the produced disruption, such as pollution, noise, congestion, and waste, at a specified period of time to see if the proposals are successful and if the steps are useful.

Following these simple steps, Birmingham Airport easily improves its social image for becoming much more eligible to be awarded the prestigious ACI Best Airport Award, and also genuinely contribute to the well being of the environment and the human population at large.
