Answer
Introduction to research topic
The foundation of many contemporary economies is made up of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). In the Netherlands, SMEs make up 99.7% of all firms and are responsible for about 70% of the GDP of the nation (GDP) (Matt and Rauch 2020). In order to remain competitive and strengthen their position in the global economy, SMEs need to keep up with the latest technology and adopt new digital solutions. Digitalization of the supply chain has become an essential tool for SMEs to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and remain competitive(Pfister and Lehmann 2021). In Dutch SME businesses, digitalization of the supply chain is a process that aims to use digital technologies to increase the effectiveness, visibility, and agility of the supply chain. Digital solutions like “supply chain management (SCM) software”, order tracking systems, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems can be used to accomplish this. The digitalization of supply chain processes in Dutch SMEs can help to reduce costs, improve customer service, and increase production efficiency. ERP and SCM systems can help to streamline operations, providing a single view of the entire supply chain and enabling the company to respond quickly to changes in demand. Order tracking systems can help to reduce lead times and increase visibility of inventory levels and order fulfillment. Digitalization of the supply chain in SME companies in the Netherlands can also help to improve collaboration with suppliers and customers (Soni et al. 2022). By providing shared visibility of information, companies can coordinate better with their suppliers and customers to ensure that the right products are being delivered on time. Digitalization of the supply chain can enable companies to access new markets and customer segments, as well as providing greater insights into customer needs and preferences.
This proposal provides a detailed overview of theopportunities andchallenges related to the digitalization of supply chain in SMEs in the Netherlands. It begins with an overview of the SME sector in the Netherlands, including its size, structure, and economic importance. This is followed by an examination of the current state of digitalization of the supply chain in the country, highlighting the various challenges and opportunities associated with it. “ report then moves on to discuss various tools and techniques for digitalizing the supply chain, such as Big Data analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI)”, and various other digital technologies. Finally, the report provides recommendations for SME owners and policy makers on how to make the most of the opportunities offered by digitalizing the supply chain.
Focus of the study (Problem Statement)
Examining the digitalization of the supply chain in Dutch SME businesses is the goal of this study. The digitalization of the supply chain has been a crucial factor for businesses in the Netherlands for the last decade (Ciliberto et al. 2021). Businesses can achieve cost efficiency, increased productivity and better customer engagement through digital supply chains. However, the implementation of digital supply chains in SMEs has lagged behind due to a lack of resources and expertise. This research aims to identify the challenges faced by SMEs in the Netherlands in digitalizing their supply chains, explore the factors that have prevented them from doing so, and suggest strategies to overcome them. Furthermore, the research will also explore the impact of digitalization on the performance of SMEs in the Netherlands. This research draws on at least three peer reviewed journal articles published with the past five years to identify a knowledge gap in the literature, and justify why it is a problem of interest to the academic and business communities.
• The Hook: Recently, there has been an increase in interest in the digitalization of supply chains in (SMEs) in the Netherlands.
• The Anchor: According to the World Bank, SMEs account for approximately 95% of businesses, 60-70% of employment, and 55% of GDP in the Netherlands.
• The General Business Problem: Despite this, there is an apparent lack of research on the digitalization of supply chains in SMEs in the Netherlands.
• The Specific Business Problem: Moreover, the research that has been conducted to date has been primarily focused on the larger companies, exposing an information gap about how digitalization affects SMEs' supply chain effectiveness.
Relevant (background) literature
Digitalization of supply chain in SME companies in Netherlands
The digitalization of supply chains in (SMEs) in the Netherlands is a relatively new topic in the academic literature. The growth of creative supply chain methods and models that SMEs can use to support their business operations has been made possible by technologies like the internet, mobile communication, and cloud computing. “Though digitalization of supply chains in SMEs has been discussed in the literature, there is still a lack of understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with this process”. Thus, this research proposal aims to make investigation on the digitalization of supply chains in SMEs in the Netherlands, focusing on the opportunities and challenges for these companies in terms of the cost savings, efficiency, visibility and customer satisfaction that can be achieved.
To begin, it is important to define the concept of digitalization of supply chains, as well as to discuss the different types of digitalization strategies and technologies that are applicable to SMEs Digitalization of supply chains, in the opinion of Marmolejo-Saucedo (2020), refers to the streamlining and enhancement of the performance of supply networks. The use of data to help decision-making is also covered, as is the adoption of technologies like the internet, mobile communication, and cloud computing. In addition, to comprehend the potential and difficulties linked to the digitalization of supply chains in SMEs, it is important to discuss the various digitalization strategies and technologies that can be used to support supply chain operations. For example, digitalization of supply chains can be achieved through the use of the (IoT) and blockchain technology, which can be used to support data collection and analysis, as well as to improve inventory management and traceability (Marmolejo-Saucedo 2020). Additionally, predictive analytics can be used to identify potential disruptions in the supply chain, as well as to provide insights into demand forecasting (Mageto 2021). In addition to discussing the different digitalization strategies and technologies that can be used to improve supply chain operations, This is also important to discuss the impact of the digitalization of supply chains on SMEs in terms of cost savings, efficiency, visibility and customer satisfaction. According to Ageron, Bentahar and Gunasekaran (2020), the implementation of digitalization strategies in SMEs can result in cost savings, as well as improved efficiency, visibility and customer satisfaction. Additionally, Mehralian and Khazaee (2022) states that the use of digitalization technologies can also enable SMEs to become more adaptive to changing market conditions. Finally, it is crucial to understand about the various methods that can be used to assess the effectiveness of digitalization plans in order to comprehend the potential and problems brought on by the digitization of supply chains in SMEs. For example, Bagale et al.(2021) suggest the use of metrics such as cost savings, time savings and customer satisfaction to measure the success of digitalization strategies in SMEs. Additionally, metrics such as inventory accuracy and quality control can also be used to measure the success of digitalization strategies in SMEs (Omri et al. 2020).
Benefits of Digitalization of supply chain in SME companies
• First, the digitalization of supply chain in SME companies in Netherlands can help reduce costs associated with the flow of goods(Centobelli et al. 2022). By automating processes such as inventory tracking, order processing, and shipping, companies can save time and money. Digitalization can also help companies gain access to more accurate information about the supply chain, which can lead to more efficient decision making. Additionally, digitalization can help companies to better manage their inventory, reducing the need for excess stock, and therefore reducing costs.
• Second, digitalization can help to increase efficiency. By streamlining processes and reducing the need for manual data entry, companies can save time and money. Dash et al. (2022) states that automated processes can also help companies to better manage their supply chain, reducing lead times and increasing customer satisfaction. In addition, digitalization of the supply chain can help companies to better anticipate customer demand, resulting in improved customer service.
• Finally, digitalization of the supply chain in SME companies in Netherlands can help to improve customer service. By having access to more accurate information about the supply chain, companies can better anticipate customer needs and respond more quickly to customer inquiries. Digitalization can also help companies to better manage their inventory, ensuring that customers always have access to the products they need (Teodorescu and Korchagina 2021). In addition, digitalization can help companies to provide more accurate delivery information to their customers, reducing customer frustration and ultimately leading to better customer service.
Overall, this research proposal aims to investigate the digitalization of supply chains in SMEs in the Netherlands, focusing on the opportunities and challenges for these companies in terms of the cost savings, efficiency, visibility and customer satisfaction that can be achieved. “This research will be conducted by examining the different digitalization strategies and technologies that can be used to support supply chain operations, as well as by discussing the impact of the digitalization of supply chains on SMEs in terms of cost savings, efficiency, visibility and customer satisfaction. Moreover, the different approaches that can be used to measure the success of digitalization strategies will also be discussed”.
Theoretical/conceptual framework
Digitalization of supply chain in SME Companies in Netherlands
“ goal of this study is to determine how Dutch small and medium-sized businesses' (SMEs') business operations are impacted by the digitalization of the supply chain”. The (RBV) theory will be used as the theoretical/conceptual framework for this study in order to respond to this research issue. This study will analyze how digitalization of supply chain can be used to increase efficiency in the operations of SME companies and how it can help them to achieve market advantage through competition. (RBV) theory is a strategic management theory developed by the renowned management academics, Jay B. Barney and David J. Teece, which states that a company’s resources and capabilities are the driving force behind its success. The theory suggests that a company’s resources and capabilities should be developed and managed in a way that provides the company with a competitive advantage in the market. This theory has been widely accepted and applied in the management research. This theory is relevant to this research as it will help in understanding how digitalization of supply chain can be used to help give SMEs in the Netherlands a competitive edge. To collect information from the important SMEs stakeholders in the Netherlands, this study will employ the mixed method research approach in the form of semi-structured interviews. This data will be analyzed using the Resource-based View (RBV) theory. The results of this research will provide insights into how digitalization of supply chain can be used to increase efficiency in the operations of SMEs. “This research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the (RBV) theory and its application to the digitalization of supply chain in SMEs”. This research will also provide insights into the potential benefits of digitalization of supply chain in SMEs. This research will be useful for the management of SMEs in Netherlands, as it will provide insights into how digitalization of supply chain can be used to improve their business operations.

Assumptions, Limitations, and Delimitations
“This report proposes a study on the digitalization of the supply chain in SME companies in the Netherlands. The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of digitalization on the supply chain of SMEs and the overall effectiveness of the process”. The study will involve a review of the literature, interviews with experts, and a survey of SMEs.
Assumptions
Assumptions are facts that are assumed to be true but cannot be verified. For this study, it is assumed that the SMEs in the Netherlands have access to the necessary resources and technology to implement digitalization of the supply chain. Furthermore, it is assumed that the respondents of the survey have the necessary knowledge and experience to provide valid responses. The impact of these assumptions on the quality of the study is that the results may not provide an accurate representation of the population of SMEs.
Limitations
“Limitations are potential weaknesses of the study that are not within the control of the researcher”. For this study, the main limitation is the sample size of the survey, which may not be large enough to provide reliable results. Furthermore, the results may be affected by the lack of access to certain resources and technology, which could limit respondents’ ability to accurately answer the survey questions. The impact of these limitations on the quality of the study is that the results may not be representative of the population of SMEs.
Delimitations
Delimitations identify the bounds of the study. For this study, the delimitations are the geographical area (Netherlands), the type of companies (SMEs), and the type of digitalization (supply chain). The impact of these delimitations on the quality of the study is that the results may not be representative of other countries, other types of companies, or other types of digitalization.
In conclusion, the proposed research will look into how digitalization has affected SMEs' supply chains in the Netherlands. When analyzing the study's findings, it is important to take the study's assumptions, constraints, and delimitations into consideration.
