The process of manufacturing of S3 products using a second-generation reconfigurable micro-machine tool have been highlighted here as well and a case study showing the application of such manufacturing tool in the practical world has also been showcased. The fact that the tool box is a simple set of highly valuable resources that can be used in different ways have been discussed here[3]. The set of different techniques, methodologies and regulations that are prevailing in the tool box have been identified (engineering tools, thinking tools, etc). How the organization will be able to identify rapidly changing markets in different scales is being showcased through a brief study in this article.
Main argument of the article:
The article has highlighted the fact with the rapidly changing environment and advent of technology, new challenges to the world of manufacturing are being presented. The new challenges are urging the organizations to make changes to the whole process of product development. In the new and technologically advanced market, people are demanding for better products that come with better usage options and can run for longer period of time [1]. The manufacturing concerns are faced with newer challenges on a daily basis from socio-economic perspectives. The major argument of this article is that manufacturing concerns should introduce newer ways for product research and manufacture effective and better products to serve the needs to the high demands of the customers [2]. The new products should meet the 3S criteria, which means that they should be sensible, smart and sustainable.
New generation of products is the future and the manufactures cannot take this lightly. The market is changing in different scales. The consumer demands are being met in terms of product design and development and the old range of standard products should be discontinued and the organizations should be putting all their focus on making products that will improve the brand image as well. The products should be able to work in an interconnected environment and creating greater opportunities for being implemented in new functional scenarios[3]. They should be made with the capability of greater utility and their capabilities should surpass the old stigma. The concept of smart and sensible product concept also applies to the decision-making process and this will result in enhancing the product performance like never before. The new product development is based on the life cycle of the product and the concurrent process of engineering and designing the products. Essential stress has been laid on the IPPMD model which is considered to be the backbone of the new type S3 rated product development.
Research and methodology of the article:
The author has referred to works of other authors who have published their own work in this field or product development for the new customers. An extensive literature review has also been submitted here, where it been showcase whether prior studies on this subject has promote the concept of Product Development or not. Also, whether the subdomains to this study has been considered or not. Furthermore, the IPPMD has been considered here to provide a critical approach to the study. The reference model has been sated as the cornerstone of the S3 product development model[3]. A literature review is done on the different approaches that are out their relation to the development of sensible, smart and sustainable products. A reference framework is provided here for the development of new type of products as well. Furthermore, the implementation of the proposed framework has bene vastly discussed here too. On top of that, a case study concerning the computer numerical tool has been done here. A lot of academic theories have come into the picture while the author has worked on this subject and a personal approach towards implementation of a better future to product development has been proposed as well.
Findings of this article:
The article written by the author here represents the S3 process of product development as the cornerstone for manufacturing better products. The factors leading to the requirement of such products have been highlighted by the author, they are connectivity, customization, flexibility, environment better aspect, etc. The study has focused on the fact that the sustainability of a product on the economic and social environment is of utmost importance and this defines the lifespan of a product. The urge of product development has been based around the theoretical model of IPPMD.
The author’s finding redefined sensing the urge of product development as the first step to making new products itself. The cyber-physical production system has brought in a number of changes in the present manufacturing models of many industries. As per the findings of the author, it seems that products that can be identified as mechatronic products share the same kind of challenges and they both come from multiple disciplinary backgrounds and that is one of the prime reasons for them being similar[3]. These kinds of products can incorporate the open systems in the present times. The author has also done a vast study on the lifecycle of the products, based on which changes can be implemented on the manufacturing process. First stage is the manufacturing stage, that involves the gathering of raw materials, involves sub processes like manufacturing and transport and distribution. The second stage is the stage of application and usage, which involves the consumption and maintenance of the products. The third and final stage is the end of life stage for the products, which mainly concerns the reuse or recycle decisions. All these stages were identified on the basis of life cycle analysis theory, which is a software primarily used to perform the evaluation of a concept.
Problems highlighted by author:
The main problems highlighted by the author here related to the different stages of product development. If the sense or urgent of product development does not arise, then there will lesser chances of developing newer and better products. The social and economical problems of the present times can be a barrier to product developments. There is always a question of acceptability of the product [3]. Furthermore, many experts are of the opinion that product development based on the S3 model can bring a huge cost impact on the organizations. Massive competition has been created due to social problems, which is forcing all industries to go under changes. The problem will arise, when an organization will try to continue to produce the same kind of products that it has been making for ages [3]. Not undertaking a product development decision will incur the continuity of the business. If there is limited innovation and ideation in the organization then, that can be a problem for the enterprise too.
Conclusion of article and its relevance to study unit:
The study has represented the concept of smart, sensible and sustainable products and how they will change the newer generation of product development. These products will come with the advantage of being flexible, environment friendly, more connective, etc. The reference model that has been used for getting a better scenario on product development is the IPPMD reference model. The product development entity of IPPMD has been used as a cornerstone for all research work here. This will provide the business with a set of activities which can be classified in terms of analysis, methods and thinking tools. A set of tools will come forward to be the prime element in changing the engineering and thinking process in the field of product manufacturing and development.
There has to be a proper collaboration between the elements of S3 rated product development. The PLM software system is by far the finest strategy for the development of changes in a product development. It can be concluded that the S3 development idea of new product manufacturing will provide an organization with a competitive edge and help it to compete with the social and economical changes.
