Metal Roofing Materials Evaluation Materials Evaluation

Question

Task: What are the properties, benefits, and usage of different Metal Roofing Materials Evaluation materials?

Answer

Metal Roofing Materials Evaluation Materials Evaluation

Roofing materials require to be carefully chosen after close evaluations of their properties due to them being exposed to extreme weather and conditions (Spence & Kultermann 2016, p. 502). This makes it critical for the materials to poses certain properties so as to ensure they remain in use for the longest possible time and require the least amount of maintenance. The average life span of a normal metal roof will be between 40 and 70 years but this is directly influenced by the conditions and materials the roof comes in to contact with (Oliver, Albon & Garner 1997). Below is a summary of three Metal Roofing Materials Evaluation materials which are commonly used on the global market.

Material

Metal Roofing Materials Evaluation - Properties, Benefits and Usage

Steel

  • Life span ranges from 40+ years
  • Low cost affordable for roofing large surface area
  • Corrosion resistant when enamel coated
  • Requires corrosion enamel coating every 24 months
  • Painting Required every 24 months
  • Strong resistance from pressure
  • Weight – heavy roofing materials when used in thick gauge
  • Extrusion properties – hard materials likely to fracture and crack when placed under intense sudden pressure.
  • Withstand extreme heat and cold conditions
  • Fixture – fastened to either wood or steel truss frames using u bolts which makes then easy to mx and remove.
  • Packaging, Lifting & Transportation – required to be packed and fastened in sets of 100-150 pse which creates large and stronger volume and surface area which reduces he risk of damage

Aluminium

  • Life span 100+ years
  • High Cost (double cost of steel)
  • Always corrosion resistant with or without enamel
  • No Corrosion enamel required
  • Painting required every 36 to 48 months
  • Light weight but weaker tensile strength as compared to steal. Easily fractured under pressure stress
  • Weight – Light Weight and strong
  • Extrusion – materials is malleable allowing it to be easily pressed in to a desired shape
  • Withstands extreme heat and cold conditions
  • Fixture – fastened to either wood or steel truss frames using u bolts which makes then easy to mx and remove.
  • Packaging, Lifting & Transportation – required to be packed and fastened in sets of 100 -200 pse which creates large and stronger volume and surface area which reduces the risk of damage

Copper coated

  • This  Metal Roofing Materials Evaluation Life span ranges from 60+ years
  • Very costly but high Cost compensated by durability
  • Corrosion resistant on copper coated areas
  • Permanent Copper coating
  • Painting Required every 36-48 months
  • Strong under pressure due to having stainless steel base layers
  • Weight – Heavy due to steel base coated with thick layer of copper for corrosion resistance.
  •  Extrusion properties – copper is soft making is very favourable for pressing in to any desirable shapes.
  • coating Liable to chip and flake under extreme conditions or when in contact with certain elements
  • Fixture – fastened to either wood or steel truss frames using u bolts which makes then easy to mx and remove.
  • Packaging, Lifting & Transportation – required being packed and fastened in sets of 50-100 pse to prevent over stressing individual sheets and chipping the copper later.
