Founded in 1969 in Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia or USM began operations as the Malayan Teachers' Training College and in 1971 saw it move to Minden. The University started as Universiti Pulau Pinang when D S Ramanathan had the vision of having a university that is based in the city of Penang. After his appointment as the Penang University Project Committee Chairman, his vision started to take shape. The project's foundation was laid on the 7th of August in 1967 by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia Y.T.M. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.
USM has three main campuses known as the Main Campus, the Health Campus and the Engineering Campus. Named after the city of Minden in Germany, the foundation of the main campus was laid on the location of a former colonial territory known as the British Minden Barracks. Kubang Kerian in Kelantan houses the Health Campus which was earlier known as USM Hospital in 1982. With the School of Medical science being shifted from Minden to Kubang Kerian, the campus saw great expansion efforts. Formally known as the Perak Branch Campus, the Engineering Campus is situated in Perak at Tronoh. However, the campus shifted to Nibong Tebal in mainland Penang after 15 years.

USM has four major faculties, also known as Schools. The Technology Schools include the School of Civil Engineering, School of Industrial Technology, School of Building, Housing, and Planning, School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Aerospace Engineering. The School of Liberal Arts houses the School of Educational Studies, School of Communication, School of Humanities, School of Management and the School of Arts, among several others. The School of Science includes the School of Computer Sciences, School of Chemical Sciences, and Physics. Finally, the School of Health Sciences includes the School of Dental Sciences, School of Medical Sciences, School of Pharmaceutical Studies, among many others.
