The University of Malaya, also referred to as UM, is a public research university that is said to be one of the country's oldest and most esteemed universities. Founded in 1949 in Singapore, the University of Malaya was formed due to a merger with King Edward VII College of Medicine and the Raffles College. The University saw rapid growth during its first decade of existence, which helped establish two autonomous divisions in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Times Higher Education has consistently ranked the University between 301 and 350 in its world university rankings.
1959 saw the University being segregated into two distinct divisions. The following year, two territorial governments expressed their desire to convert the divisions into a national university. This led to the legislation being passed in 1961, with the University of Malaya being established on the first of January in 1962. On the other side of the border, the Singapore Campus was recognized as the University of Singapore. Autonomy was granted to UM in 2012 by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Currently, the campus of UM is situated in Kuala Lumpur and the university houses 13 faculties, two academies and three centres. The faculties include Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Business and Accountancy, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Built Environment and the Faculty of Education. Two academies include the Academy of Islamic Studies and Academy of Malay Studies, and the three centres include the Centre for Foundation Studies, Sports Centre and Cultural Centre. UM offers several graduate and postgraduate degree programs for its students and has around 21,055 students enrolled in the academic year, with 14,291 undergraduate and 8,134 graduate students taught by a strong team of 2,260 members. UM has been consistently justifying its spot as the University of Choice by the reader's Digest Trusted Brand Award by the votes of consumers since 2007.
