The roots of the London South Bank University can be traced back to 1892, when the Borough Polytechnic Institute in South London was established. 1956 saw the institute the status of a regional college of technology. Later in 1970, the Polytechnic of the South Bank was formed when the institute merged with the National College of Heating, Ventilating, Refrigeration and Fan Engineering, the Brixton School of Building and the City of Westminster College. In 1987, the Polytechnic was renamed South Bank Polytechnic, and in 1990 it received the right to issue research degrees. The following year, the institute merged with the Central Catering College and South West London College and received university status in 1992. It was renamed South Bank University. The present name was settled in 2003. London South Bank University is ranked 87 according to the University League Table 2020.
The campus is located at the centre of London and is known for its advanced infrastructure and excellent academic and residential complexes. The campus features several state-of-the-art laboratories, including psychology labs, forensic labs, Acoustics Lab, Digital Architecture Robotics Lab (DARLab), Spatial Analysis and Informatics Lab (SAIL), a physiology suite, a chemical lab, a Pub Lab, Therapeutic Radiography VERT Lab and interviewing rooms. The campus also includes the Perry Library, Keyworth Event Theatre, Clarence Centre and Student Centre. There are several on-campus accommodation facilities on the campus for the students as well. The University also includes the Academy of Sports, which features a weights room, training zone, a fitness suite and a dance studio. Students can also enjoy several sports like cricket, football, basketball, netball, table tennis, volleyball and badminton in the sports hall.
